EMDR

EMDR TherapyEMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. Ultimately, EMDR is a process of reframing traumatic memory. This therapeutic intervention helps to aid in the process of healing traumatic memories beginning with guiding clients through the process of establishing a baseline for grounding and safety. When it is determined, through a comprehensive assessment process, that the client is ready for an EMDR process, the client and therapist select an active trauma memory to utilize for the desensitization and reframing process. Through bilateral stimulation, the client is guided through the process of reframing the traumatic memory. It is believed that this process relieves the activation associated with the original trauma and allows the individual to “observe” the traumatic memory and event from an objective perspective. Engaging the right and left hemispheres of the brain simultaneously provides an opportunity for the traumatic memory to dislodge and the nervous system to resolve it and begin to heal.
